A vertical hairline over a door is usually nothing. A long horizontal line running across a wall deserves a closer look. Horizontal cracks in drywall fall into two very different families: cosmetic seam failures that follow the 4-foot lines where sheets meet, and structural signals that trace foundation movement, truss uplift, or a bowing basement wall. The repair for one is a $30 afternoon with joint compound. The repair for the other can involve a structural engineer and five figures. Reading the crack correctly before you patch it is the whole game, because mud and paint over a moving crack buys you six months at best.
Why Horizontal Cracks Follow the 4-Foot Lines
Drywall ships in 4-foot-wide sheets, and on most walls installers hang them horizontally — one sheet along the ceiling, one along the floor. That puts a continuous horizontal butt-and-tapered seam at exactly 48 inches off the floor, wrapped in paper tape and three coats of joint compound. When the tape loses its bond, the crack that opens telegraphs the seam perfectly: dead straight, dead level, often running 8 to 16 feet across a room.
Tape fails for predictable reasons. The finisher used too little compound under the tape, so it never bonded. The house went through big humidity swings — framing lumber can shrink 1/4 inch across a 2×10 as it dries from 19 percent to 8 percent moisture content, and that movement shears the seam. Or the joint was a butt joint (two untapered ends meeting) that was mudded flat instead of feathered over 24 inches. A tape-failure crack often shows a slight ridge or a loose paper edge you can catch with a fingernail. Press on the wall beside it; if the crack flexes or the tape crackles, you are looking at a finishing failure, not a structural one.
Structural Causes: Foundation Movement and Racking
Horizontal cracks that ignore seam lines are the ones that matter. When a foundation settles unevenly — one corner dropping while the rest holds — the wall plane racks, and drywall relieves the stress along whatever line it can. These cracks tend to run at an angle that flattens into horizontal, step around corners, and show displacement: one side of the crack sits proud of the other by 1/16 inch or more. Companion evidence seals the diagnosis — doors that suddenly rub their jambs, a stair-step crack in exterior brick veneer, gaps opening between baseboard and floor, or a floor that has developed a measurable slope (anything past 1 inch over 20 feet is worth investigating).
Expansive clay soils are the usual driver in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and much of the Southeast. Clay swells in wet seasons and shrinks in drought, cycling the foundation up and down. If your horizontal cracks open in late summer and tighten in spring, soil moisture cycling is almost certainly the engine, and gutter extensions plus consistent perimeter watering can slow it dramatically before you spend money on piers.
Truss Uplift: The Ceiling-Corner Special
A horizontal crack that runs right at the joint where interior walls meet the ceiling — often opening in winter and closing in summer — is classic truss uplift. Roof trusses are engineered assemblies whose bottom chords sit buried in attic insulation (warm and dry) while the top chords ride in cold, humid attic air. The moisture differential makes the bottom chord bow upward as much as 1/2 to 1 inch in January, lifting the ceiling drywall off the top plates of interior partition walls. The crack is seasonal, horizontal, and appears on interior walls near the center of the house, not exterior walls.
Truss uplift is not structural damage and no amount of retaping fixes it, because the movement returns every winter. The permanent solutions: install crown molding fastened to the ceiling only, so it slides down the wall as the truss lifts; or have the drywall re-secured with truss clips (Simpson STC) that let the truss float while the ceiling edge stays attached to the wall’s top plate. Floating the inside corner — removing screws within 16 inches of the wall on the ceiling side — is standard practice in new construction for exactly this reason.
Basement Walls: The Crack You Never Ignore
A horizontal crack in a poured concrete or block basement wall is a different animal entirely, and it is the most serious item on this page. Soil pushes laterally on foundation walls, and when saturated clay or frost pressure exceeds what the wall can resist, the wall bows inward and cracks horizontally — usually at mid-height, often 3 to 4 feet below grade, frequently along a mortar joint in block walls. This is a structural failure in progress, not a cosmetic issue.
Check the wall with a 4-foot level or a string line stretched top to bottom. Bowing under 1 inch can typically be stabilized with carbon-fiber straps (roughly $350 to $700 per strap installed, spaced 4 feet apart) or steel I-beams ($500 to $1,000 each). Past 2 inches of deflection, contractors start talking about wall anchors, helical tiebacks, or excavation and rebuild — $10,000 to $30,000 territory. Whatever the fix, exterior drainage correction (grading, downspout extensions, possibly an exterior drain) has to accompany it, or the pressure that broke the wall keeps working.
Monitoring: Measure Before You Repair
When a crack’s cause is ambiguous, monitoring settles the argument cheaply. Do this before hiring anyone:
- Measure width with a crack gauge or feeler gauges. Hairline to 1/16 inch is usually cosmetic; 1/8 inch with displacement is a structural flag; 1/4 inch demands an engineer regardless of cause.
- Mark the ends with pencil and date each mark. A lengthening crack is an active crack.
- Bridge it with a gypsum tell-tale or the low-tech version: a dab of plaster or a glued glass microscope slide across the crack. If it fractures within a season, movement is ongoing.
- Photograph monthly with a ruler in frame. Seasonal open-close cycles point to soil moisture or truss uplift; steady one-direction growth points to settlement.
Sixty to ninety days of data tells you more than any single site visit can.
Repair by Cause
Match the fix to the diagnosis, in this order of escalation:
- Failed tape: Cut out the loose tape back to bonded material, prefill the gap with setting-type compound (Durabond 45 or Easy Sand), embed fiberglass mesh or, better, paper tape over fresh mud, then two feathered topcoats. Prime with a stain-blocking primer before painting. Materials run under $40.
- Hairline stress cracks that recur: Skip standard tape and use an elastomeric crack repair product — Krack Kote or Good-Bye Cracks — or fiberglass mesh set in setting compound, which tolerates slight movement better than premixed mud.
- Settlement cracks: Repairing the drywall first is wasted money. Address drainage and soil moisture, monitor for stability, and only retape once the crack has held still through a full wet-dry cycle. Active settlement may require push piers or helical piers at $1,500 to $3,000 per pier.
- Truss uplift: Crown molding fastened to ceiling only, or truss clips plus a floated corner. Do not caulk the joint and hope; the caulk bead tears every winter.
- Bowed basement walls: Structural reinforcement first, cosmetic parging last.
When to Call a Structural Engineer
Skip the foundation-repair salesman and hire an independent structural engineer — $400 to $800 for an inspection and written letter — when any of these show up: a horizontal basement wall crack with any measurable bowing; a drywall crack wider than 1/4 inch or one showing offset between its faces; cracks that keep lengthening across two months of monitoring; multiple doors and windows going out of square at the same time; or a crack paired with a sloping floor or cracked brick veneer outside. An engineer has no repair to sell you, so the diagnosis is clean, and their letter becomes the spec sheet that keeps contractor bids honest. If the verdict is cosmetic, you retape with confidence. If it is not, you found out while the fix was still on the affordable end of the curve.
