Tiling a shower floor is one of the most detail-intensive tile jobs in a home. The floor must slope precisely to the drain, the waterproofing has to be flawless, and the tile and grout must handle constant water exposure for decades. Skip any step, and you end up with leaks, mold, and an expensive tear-out. This guide covers the full process from substrate prep through grouting.

Planning and Materials
Tile Selection
Shower floor tiles need to meet specific requirements that wall tiles do not:
- Size: Small tiles work best — 1×1 inch, 2×2 inch, or hexagonal mosaics on mesh backing. These conform to the slope of the shower pan better than large-format tiles. Tiles larger than 4×4 inches require more mud bed adjustment and can rock on the slope.
- Texture: Choose tiles with a matte or textured surface. The coefficient of friction (COF) should be 0.42 or higher for wet areas (DCOF rating). Glossy tiles are dangerously slippery on a shower floor.
- Material: Porcelain (less than 0.5% water absorption rate) is the best choice. Natural stone (marble, slate, travertine) works but requires sealing. Ceramic with a low absorption rate is acceptable. Avoid glass tile on floors — too slippery.
- Cost: Mosaic sheets run $5 to $25 per square foot. Budget $50 to $200 for a standard 9 to 12 square foot shower floor.
Other Materials Needed
- Waterproofing membrane (Schluter Kerdi, RedGard, Laticrete Hydro Ban, or equivalent)
- Unmodified thinset mortar (for use with Kerdi) or modified thinset (for most other membranes — check manufacturer specs)
- Unsanded grout for joints 1/8 inch or smaller, sanded grout for larger joints, or epoxy grout for maximum water resistance
- Pre-slope mortar mix (deck mud — 4:1 sand to Portland cement ratio)
- Shower drain assembly compatible with your waterproofing system
- Cement backer board (Durock, HardieBacker) if not using foam board system
- Grout sealer (unless using epoxy grout)
Waterproofing: The Critical Layer
Waterproofing is not optional and not negotiable. Water will get through grout joints. Without a waterproof layer behind the tile, moisture reaches the framing and subfloor, causing rot and mold.
Waterproofing Methods
- Sheet membrane (Kerdi, NobleSeal): A thin, flexible sheet adhered to the substrate with thinset. Very reliable when installed correctly. Kerdi costs about $2.50 to $4.00 per square foot.
- Liquid-applied membrane (RedGard, Hydro Ban, AquaDefense): Paint-on waterproofing applied in two coats. Easier for DIYers. Must reach the required mil thickness (check product label — typically 25 to 60 mils dry). Cost: $0.75 to $1.50 per square foot.
- Traditional hot mop or PVC liner: Older method using a vinyl or CPE membrane under a mortar bed. Still used by some pros, but sheet and liquid membranes have largely replaced it.
Whichever method you use, the membrane must extend at least 3 inches above the curb and 6 inches up the walls beyond the shower floor area. All seams, corners, and drain connections must be watertight.
Building the Shower Pan Slope
The shower floor must slope toward the drain at 1/4 inch per linear foot. For a drain in the center of a 3×3-foot shower, the edges of the floor should be about 3/8 inch higher than the drain.
Pre-Slope Method (Traditional)
- Install a pre-slope layer of deck mud over the subfloor, sloping toward the drain. This goes under the waterproof membrane.
- Install the waterproof membrane over the pre-slope.
- Apply a final thin layer of mortar over the membrane for the tile bed.
Foam Pan Method (Modern)
Pre-sloped foam shower pans (Schluter Kerdi-Shower-ST, Wedi Fundo) come with the slope already built in. Set the pan on the subfloor with thinset, waterproof the seams, and tile directly on top. Faster and eliminates the mud work. Cost: $150 to $400 for the pan.
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Prepare the Substrate
The subfloor must be structurally sound. For a second-floor shower, the subfloor should be 3/4-inch plywood minimum, with joists no more than 16 inches on center. Install cement backer board over the plywood with modified thinset and backer board screws. Tape and thinset all seams.
Step 2: Install the Drain
Set the drain body at the correct height. The top of the drain flange should sit at the level of the finished tile surface. Dry-fit the drain and measure carefully — adjusting the drain height after waterproofing is difficult.
Step 3: Create the Pre-Slope
Mix deck mud to a “snowball” consistency — it should hold its shape when squeezed but not be wet. Pack it onto the floor, building up from the drain outward. Use a straightedge to check the 1/4-inch-per-foot slope from all directions. Let it cure for 24 hours.
Step 4: Waterproof
For liquid membrane: Apply the first coat of RedGard or equivalent with a roller or brush. Cover the entire floor, curb, and lower wall area. Let it dry (it changes color when dry — RedGard goes from pink to solid red). Apply the second coat perpendicular to the first. Embed mesh tape in inside corners during the first coat.
For sheet membrane: Spread unmodified thinset on the pre-slope. Embed the Kerdi sheet into the thinset, pressing firmly to eliminate air bubbles. Overlap seams by 2 inches and seal with Kerdi-Band.
Connect the membrane to the drain with the manufacturer’s drain kit. This connection is the most leak-prone area — follow the instructions precisely.
Step 5: Flood Test
Plug the drain and fill the shower pan with 1 to 2 inches of water. Mark the water level and let it sit for 24 hours. If the level drops, you have a leak that must be found and fixed before tiling. This test is essential — finding a leak after tiling means tearing everything out.
Step 6: Lay Out the Tile
Dry-lay the mosaic sheets on the floor. Start from the drain and work outward. Arrange the sheets so grout joints align where sheets meet. Cut tiles with a wet saw or nippers to fit around the drain and along the edges. The goal is symmetry around the drain.
Step 7: Set the Tile
- Mix thinset to a peanut butter consistency. Use the mortar specified by your waterproofing membrane manufacturer.
- Spread thinset on a small section (2 to 3 square feet at a time) with a 1/4 x 1/4-inch V-notch trowel.
- Press the mosaic sheet into the thinset, adjusting for alignment. Push tiles down firmly and evenly.
- Use a grout float or flat piece of wood to press the entire sheet flat and ensure full thinset contact.
- Continue outward from the drain, keeping grout lines aligned between sheets.
- Let thinset cure for 24 hours before grouting.
Step 8: Grout
- Mix grout to a thick paste consistency. For maximum water resistance, use epoxy grout — it is harder to work with but never needs sealing and resists mold.
- Spread grout diagonally across the tile with a rubber grout float, pressing it into every joint.
- Let the grout firm up for 10 to 15 minutes (follow product timing).
- Wipe excess with a damp sponge, rinsing frequently. Work diagonally to avoid pulling grout out of joints.
- Let grout cure for 72 hours before exposing to water.
Step 9: Seal
If using cement-based grout (not epoxy), apply a penetrating grout sealer after the grout has fully cured (usually 28 days). Reapply annually. Also seal any natural stone tile with an impregnating stone sealer.

For a standard 3×3-foot (9 sq ft) shower floor:

Professional installation for a shower floor runs $800 to $2,500 including materials and labor, depending on tile selection and complexity. Linear drains and large-format tile increase the cost.
Common Mistakes
- Wrong slope. Too little slope and water pools. Too much and it feels uneven underfoot. Use a level and a ruler — measure precisely.
- Incomplete waterproofing. Missing a corner, thin spots in liquid membrane, or a poorly connected drain are the top causes of shower leaks.
- Using modified thinset with Kerdi. Schluter’s system requires unmodified thinset because the membrane bonds as the thinset cures through the fleece layer. Modified thinset does not cure properly under non-breathable membranes.
- Skipping the flood test. Twenty minutes of testing saves weeks of demolition and repair.
- Tiles too large for the slope. Large tiles cannot flex to follow the pan’s slope, leaving one edge high (lippage). Stick with 2×2-inch or smaller for shower floors.
A properly tiled shower floor lasts 20 to 30 years or more. Take extra time on the waterproofing and slope — these invisible layers determine whether the shower performs or fails.
