Why Laminate Needs Expansion Joints

That is why best practice is to break the floor at every doorway with a T-molding rather than running planks continuously from room to room through the opening. This isolates each room’s movement and prevents one room’s expansion from pushing into the next. Transitions to other floor types and to thresholds work the same way.

The visible part of an expansion joint is a transition molding sized for the gap it covers. Choose the right profile for the situation:

  • T-molding: the standard for joining two laminate areas of equal height, as in doorways and long-run breaks.
  • Reducer: transitions laminate down to a thinner floor like vinyl or tile.
  • End cap or threshold: finishes the floor where it meets carpet, a slider door, or an exterior threshold.

Installing an Expansion Joint Correctly

The cardinal rule mirrors the perimeter gap: the floor must be free to move under the molding. Fasten the track or molding to the subfloor, never pinch the laminate planks themselves.

  1. Plan the breaks: mark doorways and any run that exceeds the maximum before you start laying planks.
  2. Leave the gap: stop the planks short on each side, leaving the spec’d clearance, typically matching the perimeter gap.
  3. Mount the track: screw or glue the T-molding base track to the subfloor, centered in the gap.
  4. Snap in the molding: the visible T-piece clicks into the track and floats over the planks without pinning them.

Avoiding the Common Mistakes

Two errors cause most failures. First, running laminate continuously through doorways and across the whole house to avoid transition strips; it looks seamless until the floor buckles. Second, nailing or gluing trim through the planks, which pins the floor and guarantees stress damage. Avoid both, respect your product’s maximum run dimensions, and keep indoor humidity reasonably stable.

Designing Joints Into Your Layout

The cleanest-looking installations plan expansion joints deliberately rather than scrambling to add them mid-project. Before laying a single plank, sketch your rooms and mark every doorway, then measure each continuous run to see where it approaches the manufacturer’s maximum length or width. Place the breaks where they make visual sense, ideally centered in a doorway under a closed or partly closed door, where a T-molding looks intentional rather than random. In a long hallway that exceeds the limit, position the joint at a natural pinch point or alignment with a doorway off the corridor so the transition reads as a design choice.

Choosing molding colors that match or complement the flooring helps the joints blend in. With a little forethought, the necessary breaks become nearly invisible parts of the floor instead of awkward interruptions you wish you had avoided.

Underlayment and Subfloor Factors

Expansion joints work hand in hand with the rest of a sound floating-floor system, so do not treat them in isolation. A quality underlayment lets the planks slide and expand freely while cushioning sound, and a moisture barrier under laminate over concrete is essential, since absorbed moisture causes the very swelling that drives buckling. The subfloor itself must be flat, within roughly 3/16 inch over 10 feet, because dips and humps stress the locking joints and can mimic or worsen expansion problems. Acclimate the laminate in the installation space for the manufacturer’s recommended time, often 48 hours, so the planks reach indoor temperature and humidity before they are locked together. When the underlayment, moisture control, flat subfloor, perimeter gap, and expansion joints all work together, the floor moves quietly and safely through every season.
