Every pipe and duct that pokes through your roof needs a hat — and when that hat cracks, rusts, or blows off, water follows the penetration straight into your ceiling. A roof vent cap is the weatherproof cover that tops plumbing stacks, bathroom fan ducts, dryer vents, and kitchen exhaust terminations, letting air or gas out while keeping rain, snow, birds, and squirrels from getting in. What a Vent Cap Does (and What It Doesn’t)

A cap has three jobs: shed water away from the open pipe or duct, maintain airflow or gas escape with minimal restriction, and block pests. On exhaust ducts it usually adds a fourth — a backdraft damper flap that stops cold outside air from pouring down the duct when the fan is off. The Four Caps on a Typical Roof

Plumbing vent stack caps and boots

The 1 1/2 to 4 inch pipes sticking up through the roof vent your drain system — they equalize pressure so traps don’t siphon and sewer gas exits above the house. In most of the US, plumbing stacks are left open on top (code prohibits restricting them), so the “cap” that matters is the neoprene boot flashing sealing the pipe-to-roof joint. In snow country you’ll also see extension caps and vandal-proof caps, and anywhere with pine trees a simple stainless mesh guard ($8 to $12) stops debris and nesting birds. Bathroom exhaust fan caps

Replacing a Roof Vent Cap, Step by Step

Work on a dry day above 45°F so shingles flex without cracking. Budget 45 to 90 minutes per cap.

  1. Buy the right unit. Measure the duct or pipe diameter from the attic first. For plumbing boots, match both pipe size and roof pitch range printed on the package (most fit 3/12 to 6/12; steep roofs need specific boots).
  2. Free the shingles. Slip a flat bar under the shingle tabs around the old cap and break the sealant bonds gently. Pull the roofing nails holding the flange.
  3. Remove the old cap. Lift it off the duct or slide the boot up over the pipe. Scrape old roofing cement off the deck and surrounding shingles with a stiff putty knife.
  4. Set the new cap in the shingle layers correctly. The flange goes under the shingles on the upslope side and side edges, over the shingles downslope. This layering — not caulk — is what keeps water out.
  5. Fasten and seal. Bed the upper flange in roofing cement, nail the corners with 1 1/4 inch roofing nails, cover exposed heads with cement, and re-seat the shingles with a dab under each tab.
  6. Test it. Run the fan or dryer and confirm the damper swings freely; for a plumbing boot, run a hose over it for two minutes while a helper watches from the attic.

Matching Caps to Roofing Material

Everything above assumes asphalt shingles, which cover most American roofs — but the cap-to-roof interface changes with the roofing material. On metal roofs, standard step-flanged caps don’t work; you need boot flashings designed for the panel profile (Dektite-style flexible silicone boots that conform over ribs, $20 to $60) sealed with butyl tape and stitch screws, never roofing cement. On tile roofs, caps mount to a sub-flashing at deck level with a secondary flashing dressed over the surrounding tiles — genuinely a job for a tile-experienced roofer, since walking tile without cracking it is a skill of its own. Flat and low-slope membrane roofs handle penetrations differently again, with field-welded or adhered boots rather than lapped flanges.

Cold climates add one more consideration: condensation inside exhaust ducts. A bath fan duct running through a freezing attic to a roof cap will rain condensate back onto the ceiling unless the duct is insulated — use pre-insulated flex duct or wrap rigid duct with R-8 sleeve, and slope the run slightly toward the cap so any moisture drains out rather than back.

Upgrade Options Worth the Extra $20

When you’re already up there, buy quality. Galvanized or aluminum caps outlast plastic two to one in harsh sun. In hail country, metal hoods shrug off stones that shatter plastic. Ten minutes of product selection buys fifteen quiet years on the roof. If several caps are the same age and one has already failed, replace the set in a single afternoon — the second and third failures are rarely more than a couple of seasons behind the first, and consolidating the work saves repeat ladder setups and repeat leak risks.
