A scatter of holes the size of a pencil tip in a painted wall looks trivial — most homeowners blame picture nails or bugs long gone. But termite pinholes in drywall are frequently the only visible symptom of a colony that has been eating the paper facing and the studs behind it for months or years. Termites consume cellulose, and drywall is a cellulose sandwich: paper faces bonded to a gypsum core. By the time holes appear on the painted surface, the insects are already through the wall’s thickness. Here is how to read the evidence, tell drywood from subterranean activity, and what the inspection, treatment, and repair path actually looks like.

Why Termites Make Pinholes in Drywall
Termites do not eat through walls to get out — they tunnel inside the wall system eating the paper facings and any wood framing, and occasionally break the painted surface by accident. When they do, workers immediately plug the breach to protect the colony’s humidity, sealing the hole with a speck of soil or fecal cement. That produces the diagnostic signature: tiny holes, roughly 1/16″ to 1/8″, often with a dab of dried mud or a brown crusty plug in or around them. A clean, open pinhole with no plug material is more likely a nail hole or, if perfectly round at about 1/16″, an exit hole from wood-boring beetles in trim behind the drywall. Plugged holes, or holes that weep fine grit, point to termites.
Drywood vs Subterranean: Reading the Evidence
The two termite groups leave different fingerprints, and the distinction drives completely different treatments.
Subterranean termites (most of the U.S.)
- Mud is everywhere in their evidence. Pinholes plugged with soil-colored cement, and — the giveaway — mud tubes: pencil-width earthen tunnels climbing foundation walls, piers, or inside wall cavities, connecting soil moisture to the wood they are eating.
- Damage follows the paper: they often strip the drywall’s inner paper face in branching, dirt-lined galleries while leaving paint intact, producing faint rippled or “wandering trail” textures under the finish.
- They need ground contact or another moisture source, so activity concentrates on lower floors, near plumbing penetrations, and at slab cracks.
Drywood termites (Gulf Coast, coastal California, Southwest, Hawaii)
- Frass is their signature. Drywood colonies live entirely inside dry wood and push waste out through “kick-out holes” — pinholes beneath which accumulate small piles of frass: dry, six-sided pellets about 1 mm long that look like coarse sand or ground pepper and pour out fresh after you vacuum them.
- No mud, no soil contact. Evidence can appear anywhere — window frames, attic walls, second-story ceilings.
- Winged swarmers (or their shed wings on sills) in late summer and fall confirm a mature colony.
Quick field rule: mud tubes + plugged holes = subterranean; dry pellet piles under open pinholes = drywood. Flying-ant lookalikes matter too — termite swarmers have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and thick waists, distinctions covered in depth in ant-versus-termite comparisons.
Other Drywall Signs That Corroborate
Pinholes rarely travel alone. Walk the wall with a flashlight held at a raking angle and check for:
- Bubbling, blistering, or peeling paint with no plumbing nearby — termites raise humidity inside the wall, and moisture-blistered paint over intact drywall is a classic false “water leak.”
- Hollow or papery sound when you knock along the stud lines; heavily eaten drywall and studs resolve to a dull cardboard tap.
- Faint clicking or rustling in a quiet room at night — soldier termites bang their heads against gallery walls when disturbed; it is subtle but real in heavy infestations.
- Sagging drywall or doors newly out of square, indicating structural members are compromised.
- Baseboard damage: press a screwdriver flat against baseboard near the pinholes; termite-hollowed trim dents with hand pressure.
Inspection: What You Can Do and When to Call
A homeowner’s inspection is triage, not a verdict. Do this much yourself: photograph and mark every pinhole with painter’s tape; check the exterior foundation line, crawlspace piers, and garage slab edges for mud tubes; probe accessible sills and rim joists with an awl; and collect any frass or dead swarmers in a zip bag for identification. Then bring in a licensed termite inspector — most offer free or $75 to $150 inspections, and a formal WDIR (wood-destroying insect report) runs about $100 to $200. Professionals add tools that settle ambiguous cases: moisture meters (subterranean galleries read wet), infrared cameras, acoustic detectors, and in some markets termite-sniffing dogs. Insist on the inspector opening or scoping at least one suspect cavity; treating on surface evidence alone risks both under-treating and overpaying.
Treatment Routes and Costs
Treatment follows the species identification:
- Subterranean — liquid soil treatment: trenching and injecting a non-repellent termiticide (Termidor/fipralone-class products) around the foundation creates a transfer zone that eliminates the colony. Typical cost: $3 to $16 per linear foot, or $1,500 to $3,000 for an average home, with 5-to-10-year warranties.
- Subterranean — bait systems: Sentricon or Trelona stations ringing the house, monitored quarterly. Roughly $1,200 to $3,800 installed plus $280 to $500 annual monitoring; slower than liquids but excellent where drainage or wells preclude trenching.
- Drywood — localized treatment: for confined colonies, injection of foam or dust termiticides (or borate gel) into galleries through the very kick-out holes you found, $300 to $1,500 per area. Orange-oil and heat treatments serve niche cases.
- Drywood — whole-structure fumigation: when colonies are multiple or inaccessible, tenting with sulfuryl fluoride is the definitive cure at $1,200 to $4,000+ (roughly $1 to $4 per square foot), with a 2-to-3-night hotel stay.
Skip the DIY-spray temptation: over-the-counter pyrethroids repel and scatter subterranean termites into untreated soil, making professional elimination harder. DIY has one legitimate role — borate treatment (Bora-Care) of exposed framing during the repair phase.
Repairing the Drywall After Treatment
Repair only after treatment is confirmed and any warranty inspection is documented. Open the damaged sections — cut back to the centers of sound studs at least 6″ beyond visible damage, because galleries always run farther than the surface shows. Assess framing: studs with minor surface etching can be sistered or treated and left; members with deep galleries need sistering or replacement, and anything load-bearing that flexes under thumb pressure justifies a contractor or structural engineer visit ($300–$600 for an assessment). Treat exposed adjacent framing with a borate solution before closing. Then standard drywall work: new 1/2″ board, tape, three-coat mud, prime with a stain-blocking primer (gallery-stained framing can ghost through), and paint. Materials for a typical 4×8-ft section run $60 to $120 DIY; a drywall contractor charges $300 to $800 per patched area including finishing.
What Pinholes Are Not: The Lookalikes
Before paying for treatment, rule out the impostors. Powderpost and other wood-boring beetles make perfectly round 1/16″ to 1/8″ exit holes with fine flour-like dust — but in hardwood trim and flooring, not through painted drywall, and their frass lacks the six-sided pellet shape. Carpenter ants push out coarse sawdust-like debris mixed with insect parts from clean slit openings, and you will see the large black ants themselves at night. Drywall pops from nails and screws are dimples or crescent cracks along stud lines, not open holes. And simple settling can crack paint into flake-pits that read as holes from across the room. The decisive evidence remains material: mud plugs or tubes mean subterranean termites, hexagonal pellet piles mean drywood, loose sawdust means ants or beetles, and nothing but paint chips means the house is just being a house. Photograph whatever you find before cleaning it up — inspectors can identify species from a clear frass photo, and documentation matters if you later negotiate repairs in a real-estate transaction.
Prevention: Making the Wall a Dead End
Keep wood and soil apart and moisture down. Maintain 6″ of visible foundation between grade and any siding or stucco; never stack firewood or mulch against the house (keep mulch 12″ back and under 2″ deep); fix gutter overflows, AC condensate drips, and crawlspace ventilation, since subterranean pressure follows moisture; seal slab penetrations around plumbing with polyurethane sealant; and in drywood territory, screen attic and foundation vents with 1/16″ mesh and keep exterior wood painted, because drywood swarmers enter through bare checks and joints. Finally, put the house on an annual inspection contract ($100–$300/year with re-treatment guarantees) — cheap insurance given that the pinholes you can see represent, almost by definition, damage you cannot.
