Cellulose Insulation: A Homeowner’s Complete Guide

Walk into an attic insulated 30 years ago and you will often find a gray, papery blanket covering the joists. That is cellulose insulation, and despite the rise of spray foam, it remains one of the smartest dollar-for-dollar choices for retrofitting a typical American house. Made from roughly 85 percent recycled newsprint and treated with borate for fire and pest resistance, cellulose hits an R-value of about R-3.7 per inch and packs into wall cavities and rim joists where rigid materials struggle.

What Cellulose Is Actually Made Of

Loose-fill cellulose looks like shredded gray confetti. The fibers are mechanically processed paper, screened for size, then dusted with ammonium sulfate and borate. Borate handles three jobs at once: it suppresses flame spread to a Class A fire rating, deters carpenter ants and rodents, and inhibits mold on the cellulose itself. Dense-pack and stabilized formulations add a small amount of acrylic binder so the material holds shape inside walls or sloped ceilings.

Compared with fiberglass batts, the embodied carbon is dramatically lower. A 2020 University of Washington study put the embodied carbon of cellulose at roughly one-fifth that of fiberglass per equivalent R-value. Where Cellulose Outperforms Other Insulations

Spray foam in those same cavities is far more expensive and harder to remove if a wire ever needs to be pulled.

Sound control is another win. The dense fibers absorb mid-range frequencies, so interior walls between bedrooms or around a home theater pick up a real-world STC bump of 4 to 8 points over an empty cavity. That is the difference between hearing a TV through the wall and not.

Limitations You Should Know About

Cellulose is hygroscopic, meaning it will absorb and release moisture. In a properly detailed wall with a vapor-permeable interior finish and a working air barrier, that buffering effect is a feature, not a bug. In a wet basement or a wall behind chronically failing flashing, it is a liability. Get the bulk water problem fixed first.

Settling is real on loose-fill. Plan for roughly 15 to 20 percent settling on attic installs, which is why installers blow extra to hit the labeled R-value after a year. If you measure the depth in spring and find it well below the marker, top it off before the next heating season.

Dust during installation is significant. Wear a P100 respirator, seal off the work area, and shut down the HVAC return during blowing. Once installed and contained behind drywall or netting, dust stops being a concern.

DIY vs Hiring a Pro

Top-off attic work is genuinely DIY-friendly for most homeowners. Two people, a rented blower, and a Saturday will get a 1,500 sq ft attic from R-19 to R-49. Wear knee pads, walk the joists, and never step on the drywall ceiling between them.

Dense-pack walls are a different animal. Holes have to be drilled in the right spots, often three per stud bay on a tall wall, and the installer needs a high-pressure blower with a calibrated nozzle to verify correct density by feel and feedback. Hire it out unless you have done it before. A two-story 2,000 sq ft retrofit typically runs $4,000 to $7,500 depending on siding type.

Picking a Quality Contractor

Three things to verify before signing a contract:

  1. The crew measures and records installed depth or density and provides a written certificate listing R-value, bag count, and coverage area
  2. Air sealing is included or scheduled before the blow — top plates, attic hatches, can lights, and plumbing penetrations should all be sealed with foam or caulk first
  3. The bid lists the specific product (GreenFiber, Applegate, Nu-Wool, or similar) rather than a generic “cellulose”

Skipping air sealing and just adding insulation is the single most common mistake on retrofit jobs. Insulation slows conductive heat loss; air leaks are a separate problem. A good crew tackles both in the right order.
