Tile installers have a saying: anyone can set tile, but grout is where the job shows its true colors. Ceramic tile grout is not just the filler between your tiles, it is a structural and waterproofing component that locks the field together, keeps moisture out, and defines the entire look of the finished surface. Choose the wrong type or color and even a perfect tile layout looks off. I have seen beautiful tile jobs undermined by cracking, staining, and mismatched grout, all avoidable with a few good decisions upfront. This guide breaks down the grout types, colors, and application steps that make a ceramic tile installation last.
What Grout Actually Does
Grout serves several jobs at once, and understanding them helps you pick the right product. It fills the joints so debris and moisture cannot get under the tile, it locks the tiles in position so they cannot shift or chip against each other, and it accommodates the tiny dimensional differences between individual tiles. On a floor it also spreads load between tiles.
Because grout is porous cement in its most common form, it also becomes the weak point for stains and moisture if you neglect it. That is why the type and the sealing regimen matter as much as the tile itself. Good grout, properly installed and maintained, is nearly invisible in its job; bad grout announces every mistake.
Sanded vs. Unsanded Grout
The first and most important decision is sanded versus unsanded, and it comes down almost entirely to joint width. Get this wrong and the grout either cracks or will not pack into the joint.
- Sanded grout: Contains fine sand for strength and to resist shrinkage. Use it for joints 1/8 inch and wider, which covers most floors and many walls. The sand gives it body so wide joints do not crack.
- Unsanded grout: Smooth, no aggregate. Use it for narrow joints under 1/8 inch, common with wall tile and polished stone. It packs into tight lines that sanded grout cannot fill, and it will not scratch delicate glazed or polished surfaces.
A practical rule: floors and standard 1/4 inch joints get sanded grout, tight designer wall joints get unsanded. If you are grouting polished marble or glass, favor unsanded to avoid scratching, even in slightly wider joints.
Cement vs. Epoxy Grout
Beyond the sand question, you choose between traditional cement-based grout and epoxy grout. Cement grout, sanded or unsanded, is the standard: affordable at roughly $15 to $40 per bag, easy to work with, available in dozens of colors, and perfectly good for most residential jobs when sealed and maintained. Its downside is porosity, so it needs sealing and can stain.
Epoxy grout is the premium upgrade. It is made from resins and a hardener rather than cement, which makes it nonporous, stain-proof, and requiring no sealing ever. In showers, kitchen backsplashes, and floors that see spills and grease, epoxy is worth the higher cost, around $80 to $150 per unit, and the trickier application. It sets fast and is stickier to clean, so first-timers should work in small sections. For a low-traffic backsplash, cement grout is fine; for a heavy-use wet area, epoxy earns its price.
Choosing a Grout Color
Color is where you control the entire visual character of the installation, so decide deliberately. A grout that matches the tile makes the surface read as one continuous plane and hides minor layout imperfections. A contrasting grout, like white tile with dark gray grout, turns each tile into a graphic element and celebrates the pattern, which is the whole point of a modern subway backsplash.
Practical considerations matter too. On floors and high-traffic areas, a medium tone like gray or greige hides dirt far better than bright white, which shows every scuff. In a shower, mid-tones disguise soap residue between cleanings. Always test your grout color against a spare tile after it cures, because wet grout looks a shade or two darker than the final cured color, and lighting in your room shifts the read.
How to Apply Ceramic Tile Grout
Wait until the thinset under your tile has cured, usually 24 to 48 hours, before grouting, or you risk shifting tiles. Mix cement grout to a smooth peanut-butter consistency and only mix what you can use in about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Load grout onto a rubber float and spread it diagonally across the joints, holding the float at a 45-degree angle to pack the joints full.
- Strike off the excess by dragging the float diagonally across the tiles so you do not pull grout back out of the joints.
- Wait 15 to 30 minutes until the grout firms up, then wipe the surface with a damp, well-wrung sponge, rinsing the sponge constantly in clean water.
- Once dry, buff off the light haze with a soft dry cloth.
Work in sections of about 20 to 30 square feet so the grout does not harden before you clean it. The most common beginner mistake is a soaking-wet sponge, which pulls grout out of the joints and smears haze everywhere; keep the sponge damp, not wet.
Sealing and Long-Term Care
Cement grout needs sealing to reach its potential. After it cures for the manufacturer’s recommended time, usually about 48 to 72 hours, apply a penetrating grout sealer to the joints and reapply every one to two years in wet or high-traffic areas. Epoxy grout skips this step entirely, one of its main advantages.
For daily cleaning, a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft brush keep grout lines bright without eroding them. Avoid acidic cleaners and harsh bleach on cement grout, since they break down the surface over time and can etch the surrounding tile. If grout does discolor badly, a grout colorant or refresh can restore the look without regrouting. Treated well, ceramic tile grout holds a clean, tight line for decades and keeps the whole installation performing as it should.
Where Grout Cracks and How to Prevent It
Cracked grout is the most common complaint I hear, and it almost always signals movement rather than bad grout. Grout is rigid; when the surface underneath flexes or shifts, the grout is what gives. Understanding where and why it fails lets you prevent it from the start.
The classic failure points are changes of plane and transitions: the inside corner where a shower wall meets the floor, the joint where the tub deck meets the tile, the line where two different surfaces or materials meet, and any spot over a subfloor that deflects. Filling those spots with rigid grout guarantees cracking, because those junctions move seasonally and structurally. The professional fix is simple: use a matching flexible silicone or urethane sealant in every inside corner and change-of-plane joint instead of grout. These are called movement joints, and they flex with the building while grout stays put in the flat field.
The other big cause is an inadequate substrate. On a floor, a bouncy subfloor or a missing uncoupling membrane transmits every footstep into the tile and grout. Building the assembly right, a rigid subfloor, cement board or an uncoupling membrane, and full thinset coverage, prevents the movement that cracks grout in the first place. Get the structure and the movement joints right, and your grout stays intact instead of becoming an annual repair.
