The reason DIYers can install 800 square feet of new flooring in a single weekend has one name: floating installation. Floating floor boards click together at the edges and rest as a single connected mat over the subfloor, held in place by gravity and the perimeter walls rather than nails or adhesive. Done right, the system is faster than glue-down, more forgiving on imperfect subfloors, and easier to repair when a single board takes damage. Done wrong, you end up with peaking seams, gapping joints, and a floor that creaks every time someone walks across it.

What Floating Means in Flooring Terms
“Floating” is an installation method, not a product. The boards themselves can be laminate, luxury vinyl plank, engineered hardwood, or even some cork and bamboo systems. The defining feature is that the boards lock to each other but never bond to the subfloor below. The whole assembly expands and contracts as a single unit with humidity changes, which is why expansion gaps at the perimeter are non-negotiable.
Compare this to nail-down (boards fastened individually to the subfloor) and glue-down (boards bonded to the subfloor with adhesive). Both of those methods restrict expansion and require more skill, more time, and a higher-quality subfloor.
Products Available as Floating Floors
Most modern flooring categories now offer floating installation as the default or only option:
- Laminate — entirely floating, has been since the 1980s. Pergo invented the modern click-lock laminate.
- Luxury vinyl plank with rigid core (SPC/WPC) — almost all floating. COREtec, Karndean LooseLay, Lifeproof, Smartcore.
- Engineered hardwood — many lines offer click-lock floating, particularly the ones designed for DIY install. Shaw Repel, Mohawk RevWood, Bruce Hydropel.
- Cork plank — Wicanders, Torlys, Globus. HDF core with cork veneer, click-lock edges.
- Bamboo — some lines from Cali Bamboo and others use the system.
Solid hardwood is the major exception — it almost always nails or glues down. Real ceramic and porcelain tile cannot float at all; they require thinset bonding to a rigid substrate.
The Click-Lock Mechanisms
Three click-lock geometries dominate the market. Each works the same way for the homeowner but has subtle install differences.
Uniclic / Drop-Lock — angle the long edge into the previous row, then drop the short edge to lock. Allows installation against walls and tight spaces. Patented by Unilin and licensed widely.
Valinge 5G / Tap-Lock — angle and slide the long edge, then tap with a block to engage the short edge mechanically. More common in laminate.
Press-and-Lock — newer system in some LVT, where boards press straight down without angling. Easiest for tight quarters around vanities and toilets.
The mechanism affects nothing about the finished floor — they all work. It just affects which trick you use to seat the last row before a wall.
The Expansion Gap Rule
The single most important spec in floating floor installation: leave a 3/8-inch to 1/2-inch expansion gap at every wall, every fixed cabinet, every doorway threshold, every plumbing pipe penetration, every fireplace hearth, and every transition to a different flooring type.
The reason is that the entire floating mat moves with humidity. A 30-foot run of LVP can expand 1/4 inch in summer and contract back in winter. If the floor butts directly against a wall, that movement turns into peaking — boards lifting off the subfloor and creaking — or buckling at the seams. The expansion gap gets covered by quarter-round molding or shoe molding nailed to the wall, never to the floor.
Underlayment: When You Need It and When You Do Not
Underlayment serves three purposes: cushioning sound, providing a vapor barrier over concrete, and smoothing minor subfloor variations. Many modern floating products include attached underlayment (cork or foam) on the bottom of every board, which eliminates the need for a separate pad.
Rules of thumb:
- Product has pre-attached underlayment + plywood subfloor: no additional pad needed
- Product has pre-attached underlayment + concrete slab: add 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier only
- Product has no underlayment + plywood: add 2-3mm foam or cork pad
- Product has no underlayment + concrete: add a combo pad with vapor barrier (Roberts AirGuard or comparable)
Doubling up underlayment when one is already attached actually causes problems — the floor becomes too soft, click joints separate under load. Read the product spec before buying anything extra.
Subfloor Requirements
Floating floor boards forgive minor subfloor flaws that would kill a tile or glue-down install. The standard tolerance is 3/16 inch over 10 feet — fill anything deeper with a self-leveling compound. Plywood subfloors should be screwed down to eliminate squeaks before the new floor goes over them. Concrete slabs need a moisture test (calcium chloride or RH probe) and a vapor barrier in any moisture-prone location.
The substrate does not need to be aesthetically clean — just flat and dry. Floating floors will go right over old vinyl, old laminate, even some old tile if it is well-bonded and you address transitions.
Installation Walkthrough
- Acclimate boards in the install room 48-72 hours at 65-85°F and 30-50% humidity
- Lay underlayment if needed, taping seams
- Start in a corner, leave 1/2-inch spacers at all walls
- Click first row long edges, cut last board to fit and use the cutoff to start row two if 8+ inches
- Stagger end joints minimum 6 inches between adjacent rows for visual variation and structural strength
- Tap each board home with a tapping block and rubber mallet — never strike directly
- Last row: use a pull bar to engage the click joint against the wall
- Remove spacers, install quarter-round or shoe molding to wall (not floor)
The Honest Cons
Floating floors sound and feel different than glue-down or nail-down. There is a slight hollow report when you walk in heels. Furniture rolls on caster wheels can move the entire mat over years. Heavy fixtures like full-size kitchen islands should not sit on top of a floating floor — they trap a section and prevent expansion. Use furniture pads under chair legs and avoid dragging anything heavy.
Repair is easier than glue-down (you can sometimes pull up to a damaged board and replace it) but harder than the marketing suggests. Replacing a board in the middle of a room often means working back from the nearest wall, which damages the click joints of every board you remove.
