How to Build a Brick Patio: Step-by-Step Guide

Learning how to build a brick patio is one of the most rewarding weekend-scale projects a homeowner can take on, and it’s well within reach if you respect the prep work. The bricks themselves are the easy part. What separates a patio that stays flat for 20 years from one that heaves and sinks in two is the base underneath. Get the excavation and compaction right and the rest is almost meditative. Cut corners on the foundation and no amount of pretty brickwork will save it.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Gather everything before you break ground so you’re not making hardware-store runs mid-project. For a standard patio you’ll want:

Step 1: Plan and Mark the Layout

Decide on size and shape, then mark the perimeter with stakes and mason’s line. A common starting size is 10 by 12 feet, which comfortably holds a table and chairs. Call 811 to have underground utilities located before you dig, every time, no exceptions.

Build in a slight slope for drainage, about 1/4 inch of fall per foot, running away from your house. On a 12-foot run that’s a 3-inch drop across the patio. Water that pools against the foundation is a problem you do not want to create.

Step 2: Excavate the Area

Dig out the marked area to the right depth. Total excavation equals your brick thickness plus the base and sand layers. For a typical residential patio, plan on:

  • 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base
  • 1 inch of bedding sand
  • 2 to 2.5 inches for the brick itself

That puts most excavations at 7 to 9 inches deep. Keep the bottom of the hole following the same slope you planned on top. Lay down landscape fabric over the soil to keep weeds out and stop the gravel from sinking into the dirt over time.

Step 3: Build and Compact the Base

This is the step that determines whether you did the job right. Add gravel in 2-inch lifts, compacting each layer thoroughly with the plate compactor before adding the next. Compacting in thin lifts is the secret; dump it all at once and the lower material never densifies properly.

Check the slope with your level as you go. A well-compacted base feels rock solid underfoot and shows no give when you walk across it. Spend extra time here. I tell every homeowner that 80 percent of a patio’s lifespan is decided before the first brick ever touches sand.

Step 4: Set the Edge Restraints and Sand Bed

Install edge restraints around the perimeter, spiking them into the compacted base. These hold the bricks tight and stop the whole field from creeping outward under foot traffic. Without restraints, the outer rows wander within a season or two.

Next, lay two screed pipes or rails on the base, spread your bedding sand between them, and drag a straight screed board across the pipes to level a smooth, even 1-inch sand layer. Don’t compact this sand; it’s meant to stay loose so the bricks seat into it. Screed only as much area as you can pave before you’d disturb it.

Step 5: Lay the Bricks

Start in a corner, usually a 90-degree corner against the house, and work outward, setting each brick straight down into the sand rather than sliding it. Sliding pushes sand ahead of the brick and ruins your level bed. Keep joints tight, ideally 1/8 to 1/4 inch, and check your alignment against the mason’s line every few rows.

Popular patterns each have a different look and difficulty:

  1. Running bond: Simplest, bricks offset by half, minimal cutting.
  2. Herringbone: Strong interlock and a classic look, but more cuts at the edges.
  3. Basketweave: Pairs of bricks alternating direction, easy and traditional.

Tap each brick down with a rubber mallet to seat it level with its neighbors. When you reach the edges, mark and cut bricks with a masonry saw for a clean fit.

Step 6: Lock It In and Finish

Once all the bricks are down, sweep polymeric sand across the surface, working it into every joint with a broom. Run the plate compactor over the whole patio (a rubber mat or a few cardboard sheets under it protects the brick faces) to vibrate the sand down and settle the pavers into the bed. Sweep in more sand and compact again until the joints are full.

Mist the patio lightly with water per the polymeric sand instructions; this activates the binders so the joints harden and resist weeds and washout. Avoid flooding it. A light, even misting is what you’re after, and the joints set up within a day.
