You pull a load of damp clothes from the dryer after a 45-minute cycle and realize the drum was tumbling but the air never warmed up. A no heat dryer almost always points to one of four specific failures: a tripped or blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element, a bad cycling thermostat, or a vent line so clogged the safety circuit shut the heat off to protect the appliance. Most of these are 10-minute fixes with a $15 part once you know which one is at fault. The diagnostic sequence below covers electric and gas models and walks through the same logic an appliance repair tech would use on a service call.
Start With the Obvious Settings
Before opening any panels, confirm the cycle setting. Modern dryers have an Air Fluff or Air Only option that intentionally runs without heat for delicate items and sneakers. The setting often sits right next to the standard Cottons cycle on the dial, and an accidental bump is the cause of perhaps one in ten “broken dryer” complaints.
Also check that any child lock or eco mode is not engaged. Some Samsung and LG models default to a low-heat eco cycle that takes much longer and runs cooler than expected. The owner’s manual lists the cycle temperatures for each setting. Most dryers heat the inlet air to 130 to 150°F on standard cycles and 110 to 125°F on delicate.
Check the Power Supply
Electric dryers run on 240 volts split across two 120-volt legs. If one of the two breakers in the double-pole 30-amp breaker trips, the dryer still spins (the motor uses one leg) but the heating element gets no power. The drum turns and the timer counts down with no heat.
Open the breaker panel and look for the dryer breaker, labeled 30A. If it appears tripped (handle between on and off), flip it fully off and then fully on. If it sits at “on” but you suspect a partial trip, do the same reset. Test the dryer immediately. If the heat returns, you are done. If the breaker trips again within minutes, you have a short circuit and need an electrician.
The Thermal Fuse Is the Most Common Culprit
Every dryer made in the last 30 years has a one-time thermal fuse on the blower housing or near the heating element. It blows when the exhaust temperature exceeds about 196°F, which happens whenever the vent gets blocked. Once it blows, the dryer either stops running entirely or runs without heat depending on the model.

Test with a multimeter set to continuity. A good fuse shows continuity (beep or zero ohms). A blown fuse reads open (OL or infinity). Replace with the exact OEM part. Universal fuses sometimes lack the right temperature rating and cause repeat failures.
The Vent Line Caused the Fuse to Blow
Replacing the thermal fuse without fixing the underlying cause guarantees you will replace it again within months. The fuse blew because the dryer overheated, and the dryer overheated because the exhaust could not vent properly.
Disconnect the dryer from the wall and pull the flex duct off both ends. Use a Gardus LintEater rotary brush kit ($35 at Home Depot) to clean the entire run from the dryer connection out to the exterior wall vent hood. Most homes accumulate enough lint in 12 to 18 months to restrict airflow by 30 to 50 percent. The blockage is rarely visible from either end. It sits halfway down the duct in a curve or coupling.
Check the exterior vent hood damper as well. Cheap white plastic dampers crack and stick shut. Replace with a heavy-duty Deflecto BVH4 with a wide-open louvered design at $18, or a no-pest cap from Heartland Products for $35.
The Heating Element on Electric Models
The heating element is a coil of nichrome wire inside a metal housing, typically at the back of an electric dryer. When it burns through, the dryer runs but produces no heat. Element life averages 8 to 14 years depending on use and how often the vent gets cleaned.
Access requires pulling the back panel off the dryer (usually 4 to 8 hex-head screws) and removing the wires from the element terminals. Test with a multimeter on the ohms setting. A good element measures 8 to 15 ohms across the terminals. An open element reads infinity. Replacement elements run $25 to $75 depending on brand. Whirlpool 279838 and GE WE11M29 are the two most common parts and cover roughly half of all US electric dryers.
Gas Dryer Specifics
Gas dryers add two more failure points. The igniter, which is a small ceramic glow plug that heats up red hot to light the gas, and the gas valve coils that open and close the gas line. Either can fail and leave the dryer running with no heat.
An igniter that fails to glow at all almost certainly burned out and needs replacement. Igniter 279311 fits most Whirlpool and Kenmore gas dryers at $18 to $28. If the igniter glows but the gas does not ignite, the valve coils are stuck closed. Replace the coil set, typically two coils on a single bracket, for $25 to $45.
Confirm the home’s gas supply first. A closed shutoff valve at the dryer connection or downstream at the meter looks like a heating problem. Check the gas valve handle (parallel to the pipe equals open, perpendicular equals closed).
The Cycling Thermostat
If the thermal fuse and heating element both test good, the next suspect is the cycling thermostat, also called the operating thermostat. It cycles the heating element on and off to maintain the cycle temperature setpoint. A failed thermostat stuck in the open position leaves the element off permanently.
Test for continuity at room temperature. A good thermostat closes (continuity) below its rating. Replacement runs $12 to $25 and uses the same access path as the thermal fuse on most models. Whirlpool 8577274 and Samsung DC47-00018A are common replacement parts.
When to Call a Repair Tech
If the thermal fuse, heating element, and thermostat all test good but the dryer still produces no heat, the control board is the next suspect. Control boards on Samsung and LG models cost $150 to $400 and require precise diagnosis to confirm before replacement.
At that point a service call from a Sears Home Services tech or local appliance repair company is usually the better choice. Expect $90 to $150 for the diagnostic visit plus parts and labor, typically $250 to $450 all in. For a dryer over 10 years old, that bill approaches replacement territory and a new unit becomes the smarter choice.
