Why Your Softener Needs Salt

A water softener removes hardness with resin beads that trade sodium ions for the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Over time the beads fill up and must be recharged. That’s regeneration: the softener draws a strong brine, salt water, made from the pellets in your brine tank, through the resin. The brine strips off the accumulated hardness and reloads the beads with fresh sodium, then flushes the minerals to the drain.

Types of Water Softener Salt

The bag aisle has several options, and the differences matter.

  • Solar salt (evaporated seawater): White crystals or pellets, moderately priced, dissolves well. A solid all-around choice for most homes.
  • Evaporated salt pellets: The purest sodium chloride, over 99 percent, with the least insoluble residue. Best for avoiding salt bridges and mushing, and the top pick if your water has some iron. Costs a little more.
  • Rock salt: Mined salt, the cheapest option, but it carries more insoluble impurities that settle in the brine tank as sediment and cause bridging and cleaning headaches. Generally not worth the savings.

Pellets vs. Crystals vs. Blocks
